Weekend Fishing Report: From Augres to Linwood to the Woods May 9th to 11th

Fishermen understand that each outing on the water is a chance for adventure, packed with both challenges and exciting catches. This past weekend was a prime example as we ventured from Augres to Linwood and spent Mother's Day in the woods looking for the elusive morel!

Friday, May 9th: Testing Shallow Waters

The weekend began brightly with an early launch from Augres, aimed at the shallow waters near Pine River. The initial strategy was to use flickers to trigger bites. Although the side scan showed some promise at first, the results were less than encouraging. Only one fish was caught in the first hour.

Later, we decided to move to deeper waters, scouting six different spots ranging from 6 to 36 feet deep. Unfortunately, few fish appeared on the sonar, leading to extensive searching for a better fishing area. Overall, the day ended with just five fish caught and six promising bites that didn’t quite connect. We used a combination of trolling with meat and flickers.

Saturday, May 10th: Birthday Celebration on the Water

Day two saw a significant change in location and fortune. Celebrating a birthday with friends, we headed south to Linwood, which proved to be a great decision. The weather was perfect, setting the stage for a successful fishing day.

In Linwood we reached a three-man limit including a tagged walleye! In addition to this, we released approximately 16 undersized fish back into the water, along with other species caught. We utilized a mix of meat and flickers in 17-20 feet of water at a trolling speed of 1.5 to 1.7 mph. Not only did we enjoy a productive day, but I also brought home a fish to share with Grandma for dinner!

Sunday, May 11th: A Mother's Day Adventure

The weekend wrapped up on Mother's Day, offering an opportunity for a different kind of adventure. Instead of fishing, the focus shifted to foraging for morel mushrooms, inspired by a friend's recent tip.

We were delighted to fill several bags with beautiful morels, excited to prepare delicious morel pizzas. Though some mushrooms were slightly dry, the anticipation of upcoming rain brought hope for better foraging conditions in the future.
